Rated R Movie

This is a list of the current ratings for all movies, and television shows.

The Motion Picture Association of America put out their rating system in 1968.  Due to increasing pressure from the religious people of the country stating that there was to much sexual, violent, profane, and impudent content in American cinema.  Other countries like Great Britain had a rating system established in 1912 which was over 50 years before the United States.  Various styles of movies tend to garner a certain ranking, but many can spread themselves through the ranking system.  Action movies will typically be PG-13 or higher, while movies about witches and ghosts can really fall into any category.

In 1968 when the MPAA established their rating system it was a lot different then the ones that are used nowadays.  Here is the list they used from 1968 to 1970.

  • G (General Audiences): All ages admitted.

  • M (Suggested for mature audiences): Parental discretion advised.

  • R (Audience Restricted): People under 16 not admitted unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian.

  • X: People under 18 not admitted.

Only due to some confusion from parents did they take out the M rating and replaced it with a GP.  Parents didn't know if the M rating had more mature content then the rated R.  Also when they changed the M rating Wanted is a Action movie starring Angelina Jolie and The kid from Transformers.with the GP they changed the admittance of rated R movies from 16 to 17.  This lasted until 1972 when the GP rating came under scrutiny by parents saying that the GP rating was too permissive and wasn't looking at the true content of the films. So in 1972 MPAA changed the list again to this.

  • Rated G:  General Audiences-All ages admitted.

  • Rated PG:  Parental Guidance Suggested-Some material may not be suitable for pre-teenagers.

  • Rated R:  Restricted-Under 17 requires accompanying parent or legal guardian.

  • Rated X:  No one under 17 admitted.

In 1983 the MPAA added another rating to their list, since movie companies were pushing the bar of PG movies just getting under the rated R rating.  They added the rating of PG-13 to the list and the rating scale was untouched up until 1990.

Semi-Pro is a movie about a Basketball player from the 70's.In 1990 due to the controversy of the x rating they introduced the rating NC-17.  The controversy was that some of the movies that had too much sexual content or violence for rated R was listed as a rated X movie.  In the same instance the pornography industry was more popular and got the same rating.  So the real movies were not getting advertisements that had the x rated tag.  So that's why they came out with the NC-17 rating.

With only minor changes in some wording the MPAA rating system has pretty much stayed the same since 1990.  Here is the current list and the wording associated with the ratings.

  • Rated G: GENERAL AUDIENCES-All ages admitted.Super Bad was a great movie that came out a couple years ago a definite must see.

  • Rated PG:  PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED-Some material may not be suitable for children.

  • Rated PG-13:  PARENTS STRONGLY CAUTIONED-Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

  • Rated R:  RESTRICTED-Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

  • Rated NC-17:  NO ONE 17 AND UNDER ADMITTED.
